Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly working on a new text-based social network that aims to rival Twitter, according to sources familiar with the matter. The platform, currently known as P92, is expected to offer features that allow users to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta’s image-sharing app. Additionally, it may provide the option to bring over followers from decentralized platforms like Mastodon. Although Meta has confirmed the development of the platform, no specific release date has been provided. This blog post delves into the details of Meta’s new venture, its potential impact, and how it could present a strong competitor to Twitter.

Meta’s Endeavor to Launch a Text-Based Social Network:

Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, has revealed that coding work is underway for the text-based social network. The company aims to create a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests. With the vast user base of around two billion on Instagram, Meta sees an opportunity to leverage the existing community and attract users disillusioned with Twitter’s moderation and content policies. By providing a familiar interface reminiscent of Twitter, Meta hopes to entice a significant portion of Instagram users to join the new platform.

P92’s Potential to Challenge Twitter:

While other alternatives to Twitter, such as BlueSky and Mastodon, have attracted users looking for alternatives, building a new community from scratch can be challenging. However, with a massive user base already present on Instagram, Meta has a distinct advantage. If even a fraction of Instagram’s user base, such as 25%, transitions to the new text-based platform, it would instantly surpass Twitter’s estimated 300 million users. This potential scale makes P92 a formidable rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter, offering users an alternative space for real-time updates and engagement.

Taking Inspiration from Existing Products:

Meta has a history of drawing inspiration from successful features on other platforms. For instance, the Stories feature on Facebook was influenced by Snapchat, and Instagram’s Reels resembles the format popularized by TikTok. With its new text-based social network, Meta is expected to introduce innovative features while adopting a familiar layout akin to Twitter. By incorporating elements that users are already accustomed to, Meta aims to streamline the transition and encourage users to embrace the new platform.

Twitter’s Moderation Challenges and Meta’s Opportunity:

Twitter has faced criticism in recent months regarding moderation practices and the spread of disinformation on its platform. Reports suggest that under Elon Musk’s leadership, moderation efforts have decreased, leading to concerns about the proliferation of misleading content. In contrast, Meta sees an opportunity to position its text-based social network as a more reliable and controlled environment for users. By offering stricter moderation policies and a fresh user experience, Meta hopes to attract users who seek a platform with fewer misinformation-related issues.

Meta’s development of a text-based social network to compete with Twitter represents an exciting advancement in the social media landscape. With its existing user base from Instagram and the potential to offer an alternative to Twitter’s moderation challenges, Meta aims to capture a significant share of the market. The launch of the platform, anticipated in the near future, will likely spark further competition and innovation within the social media industry.
